On May 18, 1910, the Morton Theatre opened with a piano concert by Alice Carter Simmons, a graduate of Fisk University and student at Oberlin Conservatory. One hundred years later, we celebrated the Morton Theatre's centennial year with a year-long party to honor a storied century on "The Hot Corner" in Athens, Georgia.
Not only is the Morton Theatre Athens' historic showplace for concerts, musicals, dramas, dance, poetry, and community theatre performances, it also serves our community by providing a unique and innovative educational outreach program, MORE (Morton OutReach Experience) at the Morton, for underserved elementary and middle school students.
MORE at the Morton programs are designed to help expand young minds by developing a greater understanding and appreciation for theatre arts, and by giving them opportunities to learn from the pros, from both an audience and performance perspective.
An ongoing series of educational programs, MORE at the Morton brings lessons of history, culture, and theatre to life for young children through music, dance, and theatre arts -- many of whom would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience or participate in a performing arts environment. Proceeds from the 2010 Centennial Celebration benefited MORE at the Morton.
The Morton Theatre is a unit of the Arts Division of Athens-Clarke County's Leisure Services Department.
